In partnership with SPJ and PRSA Hawai‘i, AAJA invites local journalists to learn more about covering pedestrian safety and national trends from author Angie Schmitt. Schmitt, author of Right of Way: Race, Class and the Silent Crisis of Pedestrian Deaths in America, will share how traffic crashes are part of a larger public health crisis that requires thoughtful and innovative solutions.
What members will learn:
- How to avoid using harmful terms or conventions when covering pedestrian accidents
- The profile of a typical victim and how it can produce narrative imbalance
- How to tie individual incidents to local and national trends and patterns
Parking is available for a fee at the municipal lots at Marin Tower and Kekaulike Courtyards. Light refreshments will be available, and ticket sales from the event will benefit AAJA Hawai‘i.
