AAJA Hawai‘i Launches Media Newsroom Diversity Survey

The Hawai‘i chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association is conducting a diversity survey of Hawai‘i-based professional journalists. Our mission is to provide support to AAPI journalists, advance diversity in newsrooms, and ensure fair and accurate coverage of communities of color. While this survey focuses on ethnic diversity, we also ask questions about gender, sexual orientation, education, and more.

The survey is available on Google Forms here.

Our goals for this survey are to 1) provide a baseline of diversity in Hawai‘i news media, and 2) to help educate news consumers and media organizations about hiring and retention trends regarding underrecognized journalists.

Please note that we are only asking journalists (reporters, photojournalists, video journalists, engagement journalists, editors, etc.) who are employed by a media organization to respond to this survey. We may include business, circulation and advertising staff in a future diversity survey.

This survey is confidential, and only the five AAJA Hawai‘i board members will have access to the raw results.

We are only collecting names and emails to help us keep track of responses. Names will not be tied to reported results. Only responses for age group, race/ethnicity, and length of time in Hawai‘i will be reported for each organization. The rest of the responses will be reported at a statewide level to maintain confidentiality.

If any newsrooms wish to submit a spreadsheet with their employees’ information instead of filling out this survey for each individual, please email hawaii@aaja.org. Any questions or concerns should also be addressed to hawaii@aaja.org.

Please respond to this survey by Aug. 31, 2023 at 11:59 p.m.
