We are offering grants to help Hawai‘i members attend #AAJA22 in Los Angeles, CA from July 27 through July 30, 2022. The grant will cover the cost of registration. Deadline to apply: May 25, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. HST. We will inform the awardees on May 29, 2022. More information here.

Honolulu City Council picks projects for COVID-19 relief funds
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Ashley Mizuo reports on the Honolulu projects that will be funded by Covid relief funds. Among them are $25 million to protect water resources and $20 million for affordable housing.

Hawaii Business Magazine’s Noelle Fujii-Oride dug into Census data to see how Hawai‘i’s largest ethnic groups compare in income, education, employment & homeownership. The data shows that ethnic inequality persists in the Islands.
Updates and Announcements from AAJA National, Chapters and Affinity Groups
AAJA and the Native American Journalists Association are offering a scholarship to help Indigenious people of the Pacific pursue careers in journalism. Up to two scholarships of $4,500 each will be awarded each year. The deadline is May 31, 2022. More information here.
Job Openings
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser is looking for a full-time online content producer to join its digital team. Online content producers are responsible for creating all forms of content for the Star-Advertiser’s primary website, mobile app, and social media accounts. More information here.
Hawai‘i Public Radio is looking for a seasoned news professional with experience in broadcast news to work with our growing team as a News Editor. This position also involves working with the hosts of our main daily news magazine programs, Morning Edition and All Things Considered—updating and turning around content as the news day develops. HPR is also hiring for a producer for its daily news-talk program “The Conversation.” The position involves pitching, researching, producing and conducting interviews with interesting people across the state: newsmakers, community and nonprofit leaders, scientists, activists, artists and others. The East-West Center will be holding its 7th International Media Conference in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi with both in-person and virtual options! The theme is surrounding “Connecting in a Zero-Trust World” and will run Monday, June 27 – Thursday, June 30, 2022. More information here.
