October 16, 2016 Chapter Minutes

AAJA Hawaii Chapter Meeting
Honolulu Design Center
11 a.m.

Attendance: Wes Nakama, Jason Ubay, Kristen Wong

Call to Order: 11:32 a.m.

Approval of Minutes: September 2016 minutes were approved with changes by all board members present.

President’s Report: Please renew your membership. Kristen will email the membership to remind them. Elections coming up for local chapters! Send out a call for elections 10/24-10/31 and by Nov. 5 send to National. Ask Stan to check the email to tally the votes.

Jason to ask Ann Auman how the “Recent Changes in Honolulu’s Media Landscape” event went. AAJA Hawaii missed the event, and Wes noted that it would be useful to know what was discussed at the event as the topic is part of our mission.

Vice President’s Report: Linda unable to be present. She emailed her report.
Asian American Journalists Association’s College Night has been rescheduled from Thursday, October 27 to Thursday, November 10 from 6:45 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
RSVP on eventbrite http://bit.ly/2edOzS4 by Monday, November 7, 2016 as seating is limited.

We can have up to 25 attend including college students, college advisors, and AAJA board members.

I think we should provide enough pizza for the students, as well as the PBS crew involved in helping us with this event.

Stan has about 8 to 10 AAJA bags which he can get to Jason — so we can give those away — perhaps at College Night — unless you want to save it for the 30th anniversary.

Treasurer’s Report: Wes to email Craig about the ONA event. We decided it would be better to take Craig’s second suggestion: if he buys all the food and the cost is split among SPJ, ONA, and AAJA Hawaii. Jason is going to contact some UH folks. We need Jason to RSVP for College Night for accounting purposes. The rest of the board will RSVP as needed later if space allows. Still checking if Noelle can make it for her presentation.

Old Business: 30th Anniversary event. Focus on College Night and Elections first. Talk to Jennifer if she’s interested in being a board member. Have a beach day or a picnic day for the anniversary event. Have maybe a family event and better plan it when we have time.

New Business: Finding Kukan is premiering on Nov. 5. Should we get a group together? $14 for tickets, 5:45 p.m. and another showing on Friday Nov. 11 3:45 in the afternoon. 75 minute long film. Share on social media.

Next Meeting: TBD

Adjournment: 12:30 p.m.
