HONOLULU – On Tuesday, May 1, the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) Hawaii chapter and other local organizations will present a screening of the award-winning documentary film Vincent Who? at the YWCA Laniakea (1040 Richards St.). This collaborative effort aims to provide the public with an educational opportunity to learn about an important case in American civil rights history.

The screening will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. in Fuller Hall. Immediately following the film, attendees will be treated to a panel discussion featuring filmmaker Curtis Chin, civil rights expert and attorney Mari Matsuda, community organizer and attorney Hoyt Zia, and YWCA of Oahu CEO Kimberly Miyazawa Frank.

Vincent Who? tells the story of a Chinese-American who was murdered in 1982 by two white autoworkers in Detroit. The incident took place at the height of anti-Japanese sentiment because of the massive layoffs in the auto industry. The killers were ordered to pay a $3,000 fine and were sentenced to three years probation, but no jail time. This injustice sparked a pan-Asian identity and civil rights movement across the U.S.

“This year marks the 30th anniversary of Vincent Chin’s murder and yet his story remains widely unknown. AAJA Hawaii wanted to help commemorate the incident and give people of all generations a chance to reflect on the issues that surrounded this case,” said Lauren Kawana, president of AAJA Hawaii chapter. “We hope all who attend will come away with a greater appreciation for the individuals who fought for justice on behalf of Vincent Chin and the importance of continued racial and ethnic acceptance in our communities.”

Organized by the AAJA Hawaii Chapter, this event was made possible by the Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF), Japanese American Citizens League Honolulu Chapter (JACL), Media Council Hawaii (MCH), National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA Hawaii), Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) Hawaii, and the YWCA of O’ahu.

The public and media are invited to attend. For more event information and registration, please visit www.ywcaoahu.org/vincentwho. Walk-in registrations will be accepted 30 minutes prior to the event. Cost is $12 and includes refreshments. For more information about the film, please visit www.vincentwhomovie.com.

High school juniors with a passion for journalism have until Feb. 15, to apply for the annual Al Neuharth Free Spirit Scholarship and Journalism Conference, July 9-14, 2011, at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

Eligibility is limited to students who are interested in journalism careers, who demonstrate qualities of “free spirit” and who are high school juniors in the 2010-2011 academic year. Online applications and more information are available at www.freespirit.org.

The Al Neuharth Free Spirit program will select, teach, mentor and support 51 outstanding high school students, representing each of the 50 states and Washington, D.C. They will participate in an all-expenses-paid journalism training conference at the Freedom Forum’s Newseum, located on Pennsylvania Avenue between the U.S. Capitol and the White House. Those who successfully

complete the five-day workshop will be awarded $1,000 scholarships that will be paid to each student’s college or university of choice in the fall of 2012.

The conference and scholarships are designed to inspire and encourage students to pursue journalism, to network with one another and to develop lifelong associations. The conference, hosted by Al Neuharth, includes full access to the Newseum, interaction with media leaders and journalists, hands-on training, tours of Washington’s landmarks, plus fun and fellowship. The Free Spirit program began in 1999 and is funded by the Freedom Forum to honor Neuharth, the founder of the Freedom Forum, Newseum and USA TODAY.
